Crotch Kick Starts Marshall-WVU Fracas
There are plenty of nasty in-state rivalries in college sports. The events from the tail end of the Marshall-West Virginia basketball game on Wednesday night reminded us that that these two qualify for one of them.
With 1:37 left and West Virginia leading 61–54, Thundering Herd center Robert Goff delivered a kick to the groin of Mountaineers guard Juwan Staten. Goff had fallen to the ground after getting tangled up with Staten in pursuit of a loose ball.
Goff was charged with a flagrant foul and ejected from the game, but he took plenty of Mountaineers with him. Four West Virginia players — Aaric Murray, Terry Henderson, Jabarie Hinds and Eron Harris — were also tossed for leaving the bench. WVU’s Gary Browne, who was on the floor at the time, was assessed a technical for coming from the opposite end of the court to challenge Goff.
The Marshall center’s misguided logic must have told him that since the Herd’s fifth loss in six games to its in-state rival felt like a kick to the groin, he should return the favor.
