Baylor DC: We Would’ve Beaten Alabama

There’s nothing quite like a victory over a No. 1 ranked team to give you a healthy ego. At least if you’re Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

Following the Bears’ 52–24 shellacking of Kansas State on Saturday night, Bennett was understandably excited. Not to mention overly confident that his 5–5 team could compete with anyone in the country.

“Alabama? We would have beat them tonight!” Bennett said in the postgame fray. He continued on that thread by giving a rare shout-out to a once bitter conference rival of Baylor’s when he said, “That’s why Texas A&M is doing well in that league ... SEC teams don’t face anything like us.”

It was a compliment to both the Aggies’ and Bears’ high-scoring offenses. All the more to draw attention away from a porous Baylor defense surrendering nearly 38 points and 504 yards of offense per game. (It wasn’t much better last year at 37 points and 488 yards allowed per game.)

Then again, Bennett’s defense did harass Heisman hopeful Collin Klein into his worst performance of the season. We can let him gloat a little longer - at least until Baylor’s defense proves that its 24-point effort on Saturday wasn’t a fluke.
