CU’s Salaam Selling Heisman Ring

Former Colorado star running back Rashaan Salaam is auctioning off his Heisman ring, according to the Denver Post.

Salaam, the 1994 Heisman Trophy winner, currently promotes mixed martial arts around the world, but the Post reported that his business has fallen on hard times.

“I know he’s been through some tough times with his business because of the economy,” Colorado spokesman David Plati told the newspaper Tuesday. “But it’s not like he’s in dire straits.”

The report said that the ring contains more than 20 diamonds for 1.5 carats, may sell for $15,000 - $25,000 and “comes with a certificate of authenticity from Salaam and the auction house.”

One of the greatest player in the Buffs’ history, Salaam had an injury-shortened NFL career after leaving CU as an All-American and rushed for 2,055 yards in 1994.

Hopefully, Salaam won’t find himself in a position where he decides to sell the bronze statue itself, like USC’s Charles White infamously did.

It’s a shame that Salaam will have to give up something with such sentimental value, but the real question is: Who’s going to spend up to $25,000 to not even acquire the actual Heisman Trophy?

Admit it, you didn’t even know winners of the award received rings. Rashaan Salaam profile
