Slaton Stars in ‘05 WVU Sugar Bowl Win

Comments

As West Virginia week continues here at Lost Lettermen, let’s take a look at the unforgettable performance by Steve Slaton in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, which West Virginia won over Georgia, 38-35.

Slaton started the scoring with a 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was a draw play that Slaton bounced to the outside and into the end zone for an electrifying score.

It was part of a fast start for the Mountaineers, who took a 28-0 lead on another Slaton TD just 50 seconds into the second quarter. Georgia stormed back and cut its deficit to three on two occasions - once at the end of the third quarter and then with 5:13 remaining in the game - but WVU held on.

It all was part of a record day for Slaton, who rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns, breaking Tony Dorsett’s 202-yard day in the 1977 Sugar Bowl.

It all came before a pro-Georgia crowd in Atlanta, where the Sugar Bowl had been moved after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Slaton - currently a member of the Miami Dolphins - was certainly the star of the show. Steve Slaton profile
