Chalmers Tying Three Sends KU to ‘08 Title

John Calipari and Bill Self are about to face off in the national title game like they did in 2008 and Coach Cal no doubt hopes it doesn’t end with similar heartbreak.

The Jayhawks’ Mario Chalmers hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in regulation of the title game four years ago, which KU eventually won over Calipari’s Memphis squad, 75-68, in OT.

Star Memphis freshman Derrick Rose split a pair of free throws with 10.8 ticks left, allowing Kansas a chance to tie. The Jayhawks rushed the ball up the court and Sherron Collins passed it to Chalmers, who banged one in from the top of the arc.

The Jayhawks erased a nine-point deficit in the final 2:12 thanks to four free-throw misses by Memphis, which was outscored, 12-5, in the extra period.

Calipari is in his second straight Final Four as Kentucky’s head coach - and looking for his first national title at any of his stops. Chalmers is the starting point guard for the star-studded Miami Heat squad that includes LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Mario Chalmers profile
