McShay Touts QB Tannehill Over Barkley

It’s believed by most that USC quarterback Matt Barkley would have been the third quarterback taken in the 2012 NFL draft had he decided to forgo his senior season.

But ESPN draft expert Todd McShay apparently wouldn’t have ranked him behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III based purely on physical ability.

“I think he has a greater upside - physically… I just look at the two. Tannehill has a better arm, more mobile, I think he has better tools if he can get there,” McShay said Thursday on Colin Cowherd’s show on ESPN radio.

Tannehill, a popular player among draft gurus, threw for 3,744 and 29 touchdowns as a senior at Texas A&M in 2011 and is considered to have above average physical skills across the board. McShay has him as the eighth overall selection in his latest mock draft.

For his part, Barkley is the leading Heisman Trophy candidate for next fall and heavy favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft.

But as we know, quarterback play isn’t confined strictly to physical skills. Stay tuned in the coming years to see who ends up the more productive player.
