Coaches Ejected for Stanford-Cal Fight
Normally, in-game basketball skirmishes that get out of hand result in players being ejected. But in the second half of Wednesday’s Stanford-Cal game, it was the assistant coaches that bore a lot of the punishment.
After players from both teams shoved one another following a hustle for a loose ball, both the Cardinal and Bears benches emptied. By the time officials sorted everything out, they assessed a total of six technical fouls — three players from each team received one — and five ejections. Among the ejections were three assistant coaches: Cal’s Gregg Gottlieb and Stanford’s Mark “Mad Dog” Madsen and Charles Payne.
They got the boot for leaving the bench despite the fact they did a great job of stopping the skirmish from escalating.
We can’t remember the last time more coaches than players were shown the door for an in-game fight.
