‘12 Recruit Cassell Jr. Picks Maryland

Sam Cassell Jr. will be coming home in more ways than one to play college basketball at Maryland.

The native of Baltimore, MD, Cassell Jr. also will play his college games close to his father, Sam Cassell, who is an assistant coach for the nearby Washington Wizards.

“The hometown school definitely won out,” Cassell’s AAU coach Carlton “Bub” Carrington told the Balitmore Sun. “I know Sam has had an affection for the University of Maryland. He has a good relationship with Coach Bino (Ranson).

“I know that they had identified him in the summer time. And they have been very, very persistent. Coach (Mark) Turgeon identified him along with Bino. Once the head coach gets involved, it’s hard to get away.”

A 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard, Cassell Jr. chose the Terps over Connecticut, Dayton, Florida State, Villanova and Washington among others. The younger Cassell is a three-star player for the Class of 2012.

Cassell Jr. has played his last two high schools seasons at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, MA - the last of which was a post-grad season after starting his prep career in Baltimore.

With the Wizards’ franchise struggling, maybe the elder Cassell - a former Florida State star and NBA champion with the Houston Rockets - can get a vacation from that debacle by visiting College Park a lot next season.
