Kansas’ Bill Self Zings President Obama
Kansas coach Bill Self got a chance to meet with President Barack Obama on Tuesday and didn’t pull any punches with the commander in chief.
Self was personally invited by the president’s staff to attend a Tuesday speech given by Obama in Osawatomie, KS, which is not far away from the Jayhawks’ Lawrence campus. Afterward, the two naturally talked basketball as Obama is a huge hoops head.
According to the Associated Press, the pair talked about Obama’s annual NCAA Tournament bracket that he fills out for ESPN; the president picked Kansas to win the tournament the last two years during which the Jayhawks were eliminated in the second round and the Elite Eight, respectively.
“I asked him one favor: Don’t ever pick us to win anything again,” Self said, according to the AP. “He said, ‘You cost me money.’ I said, ‘Not as much as you cost me.’”
We’ve heard of the Madden curse, the Heisman curse and the SI cover jinx, but the presidential hex? It didn’t seem to bother North Carolina in 2009, when they won it all after Obama picked them to do so.
Also, we’re sure Self gets a huge bonus for winning national titles, like he did in 2008; but considering that Self is already making $3 million per year at KU, we’re sure his bank account is doing just fine.
