Fan Loves Dr Pepper, Becomes Star

Comments

What do Chip Kelly and lucky fan Ivon Padilla-Rodriguez have in common? They both love Dr Pepper.

Kelly said as much during a live interview after Oregon’s win over UCLA on Friday in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Padilla-Rodriguez took it one step further.

The freshman at Nevada-Reno won $100,000 scholarship from Dr Pepper for winning a football-toss challenge at halftime of Saturday’s SEC Championship Game, a victory for LSU over Georgia. She threw 13 footballs through a target at the Georgia Dome for the huge payday, telling TV station KRNV she spent weeks preparing with Nevada QB Cody Fajardo.

Padilla-Rodriguez, visibly holding back a waterfall of tears, said after her win: “Dr Pepper is seriously the best thing that has ever happened to me.” The 18-year old told KOLO TV that her family “is in a lot of debt and they can’t pay for school” and added that she hopes to become a Supreme Court Justice one day.

The Nevada student has since become a web phenom, with the video making the rounds on YouTube and sports blogs.

And yes, now Padilla-Rodriguez and Kelly have another thing in common: Both have been inserted into the infamous Pitbull-Dr Pepper commercial with hilarious results.

Considering that Brent Musburger saying “This one’s for all the Tostitos” during last year’s title game was estimated to be worth $2.5M in advertising, we’re guessing the executives at Dr Pepper are high-fiving each other in the halls today.

If they are smart, they will make Padilla-Rodriguez their version of Subway’s Jared Fogle. [SB Nation]
