12,000-Pound Potato To Appear at Bowl
If you thought the Humanitarian Bowl being renamed the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl earlier this year was ridiculous, you’re in for a treat.
With the Idaho Potato Commission’s 75th anniversary coming up in 2012, a 12,000-pound potato will make an appearance at the Potato Bowl between Ohio and Utah State at Boise State’s Bronco Stadium on Saturday.
The Idaho Statesman reported that the potato will pull into the stadium’s parking lot at 8 a.m., an event that commission head Frank Muir said he defies ESPN not to film. Formally known as The Great Big Idaho Potato, it will be unveiled at 12:30 PM without an actual veil because the potato is just too big.
That spud will take part in a national tour in 2012, when it will travel to Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C., among other places. That includes a stop in front of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which banned potatoes from the food-stamp program and questioned if it should be included in school lunches.
According to the newspaper, the commission is specific about the tour’s purpose: To dispel “anti-potato propaganda” (yes, they’re serious).
You can’t make this stuff up.
