24 for Big East Hoops? Huggins Not a Fan

While the Big East’s football conference is trying to stay afloat by adding members to keep its BCS bid, commissioner John Marinatto admitted that the 16-team basketball side could grow exponentially.

“Anything is possible,” Marinatto said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. “We’ve actually done models for 24.”

Two dozen teams? West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, a traditionalist like most longtime college basketball coaches, doesn’t want to hear it.

“Why the hell have a league?” Huggins told the newspaper. “Why the hell don’t we all just go independent then? Yeah, I think there’s a point where enough’s enough.”

Central Florida, SMU and Houston have been rumored to join the Big East for all sports, giving the league 19 teams before Pitt and Syracuse leave for the ACC.

But according to Marinatto, that could be the tip of the iceberg. And as the Star-Ledger points out, the Big East might be the Titanic.
