Duke’s ‘01 ‘Miracle Minute’ Beats Maryland

Comments

With Duke and Maryland set to renew their bitter rivalry on Wednesday, let’s take a look back at a miracle 98-96 overtime road victory for the Blue Devils over the Terps in 2001.

Duke erased a 10-point deficit in the final minute thanks in part to guard Jason Williams, who scored eight points in 13 seconds - drilling two 3-pointers - before Nate James’ two free throws with 21 ticks left eventually sent it to OT.

Maryland had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but a 3-pointer by Drew Nicholas missed as time expired. Duke’s Shane Battier scored the last six points of overtime to help his team secure the win.

It was a landmark win for the Blue Devils, who went on to win the national championship with a roster full of future NBA players like Williams, Battier, Carlos Boozer, Chris Duhon and Mike Dunleavy, Jr.

This season, the Blue Devils sit tied atop the ACC standings with NC State and Florida State, while the Terps have split their four conference games.
