If you were credited for the “worst free throw ever,” you would want to tell your side of the story, too.
As many around the internet have seen by now, Appalachian State center Brian Okam was woefully short on a free throw attempt during the Mountaineers’ 70–64 loss to Western Carolina on Saturday. Since being posted to YouTube, video of Okam’s miss — which wound up less than halfway to the hoop — has garnered over 7.8MM views as of 11:15 AM ET on Tuesday.
Thankfully, Okam isn’t hiding from his viral fame.
“I hit the first shot and on the second, it was just one of those crazy things where the ball slips out of your hand,” Okam said in a statement through a Mountaineers spokesman to The Dagger blog. “Obviously a lot of folks have seen it and it’s gotten a lot of attention, but I’m just focused on moving ahead with final exams this week and getting back on the winning track.”
Okam even shares our sense of humor over the situation. “You look back at it and laugh a little bit for sure, but it’s not something that will be in my mind the next time I step to the free-thrown line.”
For his sake, we sure hope not.
