Less than four years after a stomach cancer diagnosis, former Tennessee and NFL receiver Alvin Harper is back at work. As of May, Harper is a manager for World Champs Trucking LLC in Avon Park, Fla., just 30 minutes from his childhood home of Lake Wales.
Harper was recovering from his illness when we last wrote about him, in October 2010. His cancer diagnosis forced him to leave his position as wide receivers coach for the football team at Howard University, where he spent five seasons (2004-2008).
At Tennessee, Harper stood out on the gridiron and the track. On the former he was a First Team All-SEC Freshman (1987) and First Team All-SEC (1990). On the latter he was the 1989 SEC indoor high jump champion.
After leaving Knoxville, Harper was the deep threat on two Super Bowl-winning teams with the Dallas Cowboys. In all, he spent eight seasons in the NFL (1991-97, 1999) before ending his playing career with the XFL’s Memphis Maniax in 2001. Alvin Harper profile
