Alabama’s $9.1M Weight Room Is Insane

It’s hard enough recruiting against Alabama head coach Nick Saban after the Crimson Tide has won three of the last four BCS national titles.

Now opposing head coaches have to compete against this: Alabama’s brand-new weight room estimated at $9.1 million that will even make NFL franchises envious. According to a story last August, the facility is 34,000 square feet and includes a juice room, a nutrition bar and a medical office suite.

And judging by the photo below of the two-story facility tweeted by linebacker Matt Tinney, no Crimson Tide football player – or any other Alabama athlete, since the facility is for all sports – should ever have to wait in line to lift weights again.

Talk about impeccable timing. College football’s National Signing Day is on Wednesday, meaning there’s still time for uncommitted recruits to pick the Tide and others to flip to Alabama.

James Franklin, you’ve been warned.

    Wow!

Just think how many students could have been educated with this kind of money and gone on to have better lives than they’ll now have because they couldn’t afford to go to college. It’s a pretty sad commentary on the priorities of our society – and I’m a football fan.

You are looking at this wrong…very superficial. You need to look at the long term investment. Think of all the student athletes that will utilize this to become more productive. And how many recruits will come to Alabama as a result of the investment in their future. All this makes Alabama stronger…a winner…and a huge draw to fans and television. This creates dollars. Now, go look at the dollars the Athletic Department has contributed to scholarships…academic and athletic…and tell me this isn’t worth it. You will be pleasantly surprised at what they do for the students of Alabama…athletes or otherwise.

If their football facilities are like most universities, the rest of the athletes at Alabama will not be permitted to use this facility. When I was wrestling in college, the football team got a brand new multi-million dollar weight room, locker room, physical therapy facility, etc. No other team was permitted to use it. From conversations I’ve had with plenty of other former college athletes, we were not the exception. Football only facilities are a pretty common occurance, especially at the D1 level. This is all about football and impressing recruits. The other student athletes (the ones on teams where they actually graduate) will continue to make due with the scraps from the football team.

You are wrong. This facility IS for ALL UA teams. Do your homework.

49 other states don’t give a rip; they all marry their cousins in Alabama anyway. Keep rationalizing your gross ignorance and don’t even try to pull your collective heads out … they already are.

I am so tired of ignorant people like you making this comment. If you bother to pull yourself out of your own delusional brand of self pity and actually do some research you would learn that most universities do not spend any money on these types of improvements. The money is raised through private donations and booster funds that are contributed to the universities endowment fund. The same way athletic scholarships are paid for. It doesn’t impact the ability of one student to either be accepted or educated by the university. Secondly, the ability of the football program to raise the status of the university, funds more academic and research dollars therefore, improving the quality of the education that every student attending the university receives now and for many generations to come. Educate yourself before you post ignorant comments like this. By the way do a little research on the size of endowment funds at universities with major college football programs vs those funds of schools that do not. You will find a significant difference and that fund also funds the expansion of educational facilities as well. Without football there are fewer educational opportunities.

Where do they keep the Deer Spray? I also wonder where they house the test takers? They use the same ones to provide clean urine samples as well as to take test to keep their “brain surgeons” academically eligible. The best way to get an ex Bama player off your porch is to pay him for the pizza.

    • Steve

Yeah tell the 20 millionaires in NFL from Bama right now. ROFL. What an idiot.

Figures; the state that ranks near the bottom on any academic scale believes this makes a difference in the lives of its students. What a sick pathetic commentary on the Deep South.
