Top recruit Mitch McGary is trying to one-up all his peers. McGary breaks backboards in layup lines.
Or at least he did at this weekend’s Boost Mobile Elite 24 in Venice Beach, CA.
To be fair, it wasn’t a true layup line. A teammate put the ball off the backboard and McGary caught it with two hands, flushed it through and left shattered glass all over the court. The result wasn’t nearly as nasty as Oregon State’s Roberto Nelson, but McGary still suffered a laceration on his shoulder and was taken to the hospital to receive 37 stitches – after the game, which he watched.
A native of Chesterton, IN, McGary will spend a second season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire after transferring to and graduating from the prep school in the spring. McGary will be listed as a 2011 high school graduate and be eligible for the 2012 NBA draft.
McGary is a consensus top-five player, according to recruiting websites. Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan and North Carolina are among his top choices.
If he lands in Durham, we see Coach K asking him politely to lay the ball in in pregame warmups.
