SMU Gets Shiny New Locker Room

SMU spent almost $3 million to renovate its locker room and meetings areas and the result is spectacular.

Two SMU alums donated $1.5 million toward the renovation, and various other donors handled the remaining balance.

The new digs are sparkling with little Mustangs logos on each locker and a giant one in lights on the ceiling. There is also a new meeting room with stadium-style seating and improved positional meeting rooms.

Check out all the photos of the new locker room from the below link in the Dallas Morning News.

In light of what has gone on with Miami (FL)’s booster scandal and SMU’s own past with boosters that led to the “death penalty” in the 1980s, the athletic department might want to triple check the source of every dollar spent on the new digs.

    Good for SMU

SMU….or Vegas? Ah, the glittering lights of obscurity!

with smu’s athletic department under the control of Steve Orsini, anything is possible. His raising of money for the school and the athletic department has increased during his time, but it has been at the cost of losing supporters of 10, 20, 30 years and more. their pholosphy is to raise as much money today and with the “who gives a darn” if they will be back next year to donate again. they have no loyalty to long time supporters. the only loyalty they have is to who gives the most money “today”. That is what helped the downfall of SMU in the early to mid 80′s and they say, if one does not learn from history, history tends to repeat itself.

$3,000,000.00 and you couldn’t post a whole roll of film. Two pictures? Not a strip club I’d go back to.

What do you expect when they allow female media into the men’s locker room?

I went there in the late ’60′s and knew well, Sherwood Blount and John Appleton who were two of the main alumni participants in the, “Death Penalty”, sentence. Sherwood was a decent guy, and pretty humble. SMU players back then, even though winning the SWC, whipping Texas, and winning bowls, were never arrogant. The quarterback, Chuck Hixson, looked like he was 45 years old, but has Jerry Levias help make him a hero. We had little guys, like Gary Hammond, who was all SWC at 3 different positions in the 3 years he played. All just guys you went to class with. Then there as John Appleton, who was a fraternity brother of mine and, to this day the biggest jerk I have ever known. It took him 1 month to alienate every guy in the fraternity. He drove a red Eldroado Convertible with white interior, (back when they were a little bit smaller than an aircraft carrier), and had a Texas country girl, Tina, for his, “woman” as he called her, who everytime he passed out, got knocked out or went in the men’s room was all over the guy closest to her, not because she was loose, but she would do anything for some relief from that jerk. He had white blond hair and clothes that just begged you to kick his ass. He came from a rich Chicago family and if somehow you forgot it how rich pop was, he would tell you or show you everytime you were unfortunate enough to encounter him; he had to buy friends, and that is what he was doing when he was buying athletes. We pledged him to try to get his dad to give us a million dollars or so to get our house, which was beginning to look like the one in Animal House, a face lift and a wing added on; therefore he was deemed the “wing bulider”. I think he is/was in the real estate business and I hope he went with the economy, along with his “friends” who fled his presence after his “friend buying” plan fell through. Back then the SWC had Texas, A&M, Arkansas, Tech, Baylor, TCU, Rice and independent Houston joining. If you were interested in “the little guy” and incredibly exciting games, the 60′s were great years. The difference between SMU and, say, Texas getting the “Death Penalty” were Texas getting surprisingly outbid on player paying for a few years, and alumni who would crush the NCAA if they would have even considered harming Bevo.

Geez. You SMU grads can’t put two sentences together. Capitalization? Not so much. Punctuation? Nah. Subject verb agreement? Tense? What was your English textbook; “Fun with Dick and Jane?”

  • Dirk Diggler

Louise why are you on here posting on a sports site and not taking care of your 50 cats or cleaning the double wide?

  • Just Sayin’

Seriously, complaining about perfect grammar, punctuation and spelling on these opinion/post forums – i don’t think the point was to display those capabilities.

And, folks ought to be able to spend their money however they choose. If you earn it, inherit it or find it on the side of the road you can give it all away if you want….without others being jealous that you didn’t spend it the way they wanted you to.
