Indiana coach Kevin Wilson certainly is making his impression felt in Bloomington. And he’s not taking kindly to the Hoosiers’ familiar role as Big Ten doormats.
Take Wilson’s behavior Thursday, when he called into FOX Sports Radio’s “Zakk & Jack Show.”
Jack is former Illinois quarterback Jack Trudeau, who was having some fun with Indiana before the coach’s spot on his show. The IU fight song was played, and Trudeau joked that he didn’t hear it much during his playing days because the Hoosiers never scored.
From there, it got very, very uncomfortable.
Zakk: “Kevin congratulations and thanks for joining us. How are ya?”
Wilson: “Not doing as good as you guys, you guys gotta bunch of jokes this morning. What’s happening.”
(laughter, thinking the coach was playing along.)
Zakk: “You sound like you’ve been doing some screaming at practice, coach. Yelling at the players already?”
Wilson: “No, we’re yelling at media guys because they don’t have a clue. But anyway, it’s cool. What’s up guys?”
The IU coach then ripped into Trudeau’s alma mater.
Wilson: “That fight song, I remember putting 61 on the Illini a few years back too when I was at Northwestern and they kinda stunk at the time too. Anyway, I got some things to do guys, waddya guys need?
Something tells us Wilson didn’t care what they needed. The uncomfortable interview, only part of which we detailed above, eventually was cut short by the hosts after they criticized the coach for being rude.
Wilson’s response? “I just don’t like being [unintelligible] with guys cracking jokes about our program.”
Once Wilson was off the air, the hosts then went on to slam Wilson. Wilson was referred to as an “ass” and Trudeau said he was going to tell Illini head coach Ron Zook to pound the Hoosiers when they play this fall – also not exactly classy.
Wilson came to IU from Oklahoma, where he led some of the nation’s most explosive offenses and had Sam Bradford and Landry Jones as his quarterbacks. He knows it won’t be that easy in Bloomington and appears a little on edge.
Listen to the entire audio here; you won’t be disappointed.
This isn’t the first time Wilson’s temper made the news in Bloomington. He already cussed at some resident assistants who weren’t helping him fast enough when he got lost in an IU dorm.
Is Wilson going to be Indiana football’s Bobby Knight?
We know this: We don’t want to see what Wilson will do when he’s angry and has a metal chair nearby.
