Indiana’s Wilson Goes Postal on Radio

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson certainly is making his impression felt in Bloomington. And he’s not taking kindly to the Hoosiers’ familiar role as Big Ten doormats.

Take Wilson’s behavior Thursday, when he called into FOX Sports Radio’s “Zakk & Jack Show.”

Jack is former Illinois quarterback Jack Trudeau, who was having some fun with Indiana before the coach’s spot on his show. The IU fight song was played, and Trudeau joked that he didn’t hear it much during his playing days because the Hoosiers never scored.

From there, it got very, very uncomfortable.

Zakk: “Kevin congratulations and thanks for joining us.  How are ya?”

Wilson: “Not doing as good as you guys, you guys gotta bunch of jokes this morning.  What’s happening.”

(laughter, thinking the coach was playing along.)

Zakk: “You sound like you’ve been doing some screaming at practice, coach.  Yelling at the players already?”

Wilson: “No, we’re yelling at media guys because they don’t have a clue.  But anyway, it’s cool.  What’s up guys?”

The IU coach then ripped into Trudeau’s alma mater.

Wilson: “That fight song, I remember putting 61 on the Illini a few years back too when I was at Northwestern and they kinda stunk at the time too.  Anyway, I got some things to do guys, waddya guys need?

Something tells us Wilson didn’t care what they needed. The uncomfortable interview, only part of which we detailed above, eventually was cut short by the hosts after they criticized the coach for being rude.

Wilson’s response? “I just don’t like being [unintelligible] with guys cracking jokes about our program.”

Once Wilson was off the air, the hosts then went on to slam Wilson. Wilson was referred to as an “ass” and Trudeau said he was going to tell Illini head coach Ron Zook to pound the Hoosiers when they play this fall – also not exactly classy.

Wilson came to IU from Oklahoma, where he led some of the nation’s most explosive offenses and had Sam Bradford and Landry Jones as his quarterbacks. He knows it won’t be that easy in Bloomington and appears a little on edge.

Listen to the entire audio here; you won’t be disappointed.

This isn’t the first time Wilson’s temper made the news in Bloomington. He already cussed at some resident assistants who weren’t helping him fast enough when he got lost in an IU dorm.

Is Wilson going to be Indiana football’s Bobby Knight?

We know this: We don’t want to see what Wilson will do when he’s angry and has a metal chair nearby.

I’m a Northwestern fan, and was able to hear this interview online…..I’m surprised these two guys are even on the air. They’re ripping a program before the guy comes on? And they’re Illini fans! Illinois for the most part has SUCKED recently! So they rip him and expect him to bend over and take it! Good for him for coming back at them. If you listened to the entire thing you would see they were the ones who got so upset they actually kicked him off the show!

Typical small time radio hosts who can’t handle taking back what they dish out!

If anybody should be ashamed its these two radio guys. They shoot their mouths off get put down then start crying about the coach’s reproof. They ought to be ashamed. If they can’t take the criticism then they shouldn’t have started the argument.

  • Eric

So it’s ok to slam a program and then get bent out of shape when the program is defended by the head coach? Wilson had every right to be short with those two…why should his program have to be disrespted?
…these guys were totally in the wrong…they were the ones who were unprofessional!

  • Dave Klinker

Wow ! How are these guys on the air? They should be reminded that IU just got the top QB recruit.

    Go Boilers !

  • Collegefootball#1

I agree with the two previous posters—
The Radio Guys were jerks and immature.

I think Indiana will be a tougher opponent in the next 1-2 years and they just got a verbal from Top QB Prospect Gunner Kiel who will benefit from Wilson’s QB development.

If they can protect him and build a team around him, they will compete like Northwestern does each year and go to bowl games.

  • mike

Good for Coach Wilson I like the guy already.

  • John

These two bone head thought they would make fun of this guy’s program and he would just bend over and take it because they have a little radio show, I for one would be proud of my coach for the way he handled this situation if I were his player. Typical media reaction, how dare a lowly football coach call me on my BS? These two guys are a joke; hopefully all the other BIG TEN coaches will have enough respect for their pier here not to go on this so called show.

  • MB

Jack Trudeau career QB rating 63.3. He’s almost as bad at radio as he was as a professional QB.

The guys were trashing the program before he ever got on. Good for Coach Wilson to stand up for IU. Stay classy Trudeau!

YOU GUYS BETTER WATCH OUT .IN TIME WILSON WILL BE THE KING OF THE BIG TEN AND WE WILL SEE WHO HAS THE LAST LAUGH……..

  • Scott

Typical media tools. Don’t throw punches unless you can take a punch!!

  • Mike

Yeah, I agree with everyone. These two clowns should be fired. Get some real talented DJ’s on that show. Even better….they should talk about how Jack was arrested for DUI, hit a cop, and then arrested for playing bartender to a bunch of high school kids. Come to think about it the radio station should have had Jack blow to see if he was drunk again!

  • Nick

What were those two guys thinking? That was the worst treatment I have ever heard a guest receive on public radio. Trudeau was a college QB for a doormat Big Ten team….he’s not use to meeting a winner!!!

  • Matt

Those two guys wont be laughing and poking fun when IU is kicking the crap out of Illinois

  • mike

    you call that going postal?

  • Arrbee1961

Hmmm…this article is slanted to make Coach Wilson out to be the bad guy. Clearly, if you listened to the “show”, the interviewers were totally out of line. Even after the first poke by Coach Wilson, he was willing to discuss anything they wanted but Tru”don’t” wouldn’t let it go…

Jack and Zakk got exactly what was comming to them. I might add – if Tur”don’t”‘s kids are attending IU, I would expect them to transfer before the fall sesion starts otherwise, they might just be the targets of some hate because of their idioic father…

  • Kyle

Coach Wilson was short with them and made it clear that he didn’t appreciate them ripping his programs but I didn’t think he sounded upset or said anything inappropriate at all. Definitely not enough to call him an a**.

And Illinois fans don’t have the right to rip on anyone. They have lost 7 or more games 7 of the 10 seasons so I would have been a little offended also.

  • Bob M.

I heard about this on JMV’s show on the rival Indy radio station. Trudeau is just nervous about IU signing Kiel so he is taking cheap shots at the IU program for its losing reputation. BTW i am a Ball State fan but I think they made a strong hire in Wilson and I respect true IU fans that stick with the football program, not the IU basketball/Notre Dame football types who jump on the Domer bandwagon for 3 months a year just because it’s “uncool” to follow a small name football program.

  • Bob D.

After they hung up on Wilson; Jack:

    Called Wilson an A**.

Said he was going to talk to Indiana people he knew and tell them how bad their coach had been.

Said he would call Ron Zook at iIlinois and tell him to run up the score on IU.

    Classy!

  • SGH

I’m an IU fan however anyone ( including coach Wilson ) should be able to take some good hearted kidding. Wilson was rude and way out of line.Made IU football look really weak. You’re no Bobby Knight, Wilson, and you have a lot to prove before you can be rude to people trying to give exposure to the program.Good luck, and I really hope you can live up to the toughness that you demonstrated on a phone interview.

  • BHS

Typical idiot sports talk hosts. Good for the coach to stand up for his team.
