Ex-QB Cumbie Is TTU Inside WRs Coach

For Lost Lettermen’s “Texas Tech Week,” we take a look at former Red Raiders quarterback Sonny Cumbie, who is the inside receivers coach at his alma mater.

In college, Cumbie was a walk-on quarterback who was a third-stringer from 2000-02 and a backup in 2003 before finally winning the starting job as a fifth-year senior. He led the Red Raiders to a victory over California in the 2004 Holiday Bowl, in which he threw for a remarkable 520 yards and three touchdowns.

Cumbie spent some time on the rosters of both the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens before a stint in the Indoor Football League.

But his football future is now once again with the Red Raiders, for whom he was a broadcaster before joining the coaching staff in 2008 as a graduate assistant under coach Mike Leach. He was promoted to inside receivers coach when Tommy Tuberville took over in 2010. Sonny Cumbie profile
