There are many ways to go about recruiting football players to Notre Dame. There’s the rabid fan following and the tradition that includes Touchdown Jesus and the Golden Dome.
But there’s also Skylar Diggins.
Diggins has apparently become a de facto recruiting hostess for prospective Irish football players who seemingly want to see the good-looking Diggins – a Fighting Irish women’s basketball player – first and everything else after that.
Check this link about her popularity on campus, especially among incoming football players.
Diggins tweeted: “Just met a couple ND recruits … young men were very polite haha.” Then she responded to a follower who asked about her connection to football recruiting: “I’ve done my fair share of recruiting.”
No, we don’t think Brian Kelly has her in any official position – but it doesn’t hurt to have a pretty face and fellow athlete to convince some players to come to South Bend.
The Big Lead described her as Notre Dame recruiting’s “secret weapon” and freshman running back Will Mahone played up her significance.
“When you pick a college, you want to know what people you’re going to be around, because you’re going to be around there for a long time,” Mahone told the South Bend Tribune.
“It probably plays a bigger role than people think.”
For her part, Diggins doesn’t agree with all the attention that her role is getting, even tweeting a response to Black Sports Online, which had just tweeted out a link to a story with this message: “Skylar Diggins Being Used to Lure Football Recruits to Notre Dame.” Black Sports Online made a connection between her and Jesus Shuttlesworth in the movie “He Got Game.”
Diggins responded: “@BlkSportsOnline very inaccurate, sir…but I guess it makes for a good story…”
It sure does.
