WVU to Wear New Gray Unis, Helmets?

It looks as if there will be some gray area for West Virginia as it enters the Big 12 this fall – and that will be on its uniforms.

Check the photo below, via West Virginia Illustrated, which shows what it calls a cell-phone shot (apparently from the internet) of star WR Tavon Austin’s jerseys hanging in a locker. It includes a gray jersey with yellow lettering on the back next to the navy blue, white and yellow versions.

WVU CB Pat Miller also chimed in with a photo via Instagram, which shows a gray jersey, pants and helmet.

We still can’t confirm the addition of the gray uniforms and helmets, only provide these leaked photos. As West Virginia Illustrated pointed out, there were rumors last season of the change, and a WVU staff member told it during spring practice that different versions of the gray helmet were being examined.

It certainly is a different look for the Mountaineers, but we’ll reserve our opinion until we see the official final product – if there indeed is one.

    WVU is not a Gray school. Blue and Gold are the school colors. End of discussion.

    I have to say I am not a big fan of the grey uniform. Stick with blue, gold and white.

    The gray beats the all yellow (banana republic) unis but should be mixed with the blue. The helmet should be left blue as the colors of the mountain state are blue and gold! The last time all gray uniforms were worn in WV was 1865.

    Our colors is gold and blue. I don’t know why they want to come up with a different color. Just like men and women basketball. I went to the women’s game against marshall and they were wearing black. I was so upset that I got up and left Hugg’s comes up with this black and now I guess Dana has come up the the grey. It was bad enough to change the old gold to yellow I just hope there is enough negative feedback that they will stay with the original school colors

    That is one UGLY uniform! There isn’t enough blue and gold! The logo isn’t even the right color. TRY AGAIN!!!!

    Gray is a terrible color. Use light and dark blue or light and dark gold with a mix of black and white. Nothing else…..

      no way on the gray! hey, QB Smith looks down the field for receiver, that gray melds into lousy background. Stick with blue and gold, maybe even some white on the helmet! Go Oountaineers!

    I like the gray, just not for us!!! and I agree with everyone if we do the gray keep OUR helmet!!!

    WV separated from Va. to fight for the North and wear the BLUE military uniforms…not the Grey Confederate colors. Stick with Gold and Blue !

    Our colors are blue and gold or the white uniforms with blue are fine.

    I also agree with the commentor about getting rid of the banana uniforms.
    We love our blue and gold.

    Keep the original helmet and add the gray uniforms. Blue, gold, white and gray. It’s all good! Love my Mountaineers!!!!!

    How about this, if you want to play with the uniforms, change them to something that every WVU fan would enjoy and would keep with our heritage. A woodland camo helmet with the gold WV logo, trimmed with the blue. White pants with wodland camo, trimmed the same way, and a woodland camo jersey with gold letters trimmed with the blue. That’s more West Virginia!!!! That represents the people of our GREAT state! We NEVER have and NEVER will be a “GRAY” state! We are and always will be Blue and Gold!!!! i like Coach Holgerson, but he needs to slow down with all of the drastic uniform changes and just worry about what matters most. Winning football games!!!!

    Our school colors are Old Gold and Blue. Please stick to the school colors! There are plenty of combinations and designs featuring Old Gold and Blue without having to go into “gray” areas!

      In 2011 Nike came up with this idea. It was called the Pro Combat Uniform. Although we never wore it, the grey is supposed to be our white unis with “coal dust” on’em. If u Google WVU Nike Pro Combat uniforms, you’ll see a better picture of the helmet, etc and a description of why they chose it. Considering WV has been all about coal since our state’s beginning. I personally like’em. Not as well as the all blue uniforms, but it DOES represent WV

    Oh come on fellow ‘Eers let’s embrace change! We all know Old Gold and Blue are the true colors and will be worn the majority of the time but let’s give these jerseys a chance! I think they look Aight.

    Please do NOT use those ugly-rump, non-school colors unis. Mountaineers bleed old gold and blue. Try to force-feed us this grey crap and we might just start listening to the games on the radio to avoid looking at that mess…

    I think they look BA!! Our colors arent gray (granted) but they arent white either. I personally like these much better than the tweety bird yellow ones! And yes, they would look great with our normal helmets. And just a reminder, we havent had our TRUE old gold color for YEARS!! I never understood why we had to go with the Michigan gold. Just my opinion!! LET’S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!

    I like the Grey Uniforms. Our Basketball team has worn them for years. I think the Blue Helmet would to better with them though. Lose the Gold Jerseys though, toooooo loud.

    I love my Mountaineers in Old Gold & Blue AND when they wore the “Combat” uniforms against Pitt – NOTE: alot of gray in them, if you remember as well as black, gold and blue.

    And now — I shall love them no less in the new gray uniforms. Let’s goooo Mountaineers. Whatever you wear – I’m proud to support you.

    Idky ppl really care what their wearin as long as their puttin up points and wins is all that matters really hell they can wear pink gold and blue as long as their winning and to be honest the gray unis look great I can’t wait to buy one
