If you’ve been waiting for the merger of the Red River Rivalry and cake balls, well, you’re in luck.
Check the photo below, courtesy of The Oklahoman, which shows what served as a wedding cake for Clayton Kelley and Lydia Crawford last weekend. The set-up was a replica of the Cotton Bowl with crimson and burnt-orange cake balls to represent Texas and Oklahoma fans in the stands. It reminds us of Bret Bielema’s roses-filled wedding cake – but way, way better.
The rest depicted the Red River Rivalry perfectly, setting up cake balls for players on the field and a video board with fake advertisements – as in “Happy Home” under a Pizza Hut logo and “Wedding Bells” under Taco Bell.
As if it could have happened in any other way, the newspaper reported that the couple became engaged after the Sooners’ 55-17 victory in last fall’s edition of the annual rivalry game – in the stadium, near the 50-yard line. Oh yeah, Kelley is an Oklahoma fan and Crawford favors Texas, the report said.
The Oklahoman reported that the pair has decided to attend the game each year together and sit on the sideline of the team that won the previous year’s matchup.
We’ve seen some pretty unique things in our examinations of college football fandom, but this – fine, we can’t help it – takes the cake.
