Steve Spurrier Takes Dig at Florida St.

Steve Spurrier still has a lot of Gator in him.

According to Brett McMurphy on Twitter, the current coach at South Carolina was asked about Florida State being picked as the No. 1 team in the country by a preseason magazine.

Spurrier’s response: “They were last year too.”

It was in reference to the Seminoles’ standing as a preseason favorite for the national title in 2011, when they lost at home to top-ranked Oklahoma on Sept. 17 – the first setback in a three-game skid. The ‘Noles finished the year 9-4.

A former Heisman Trophy winner as a quarterback at Florida, Spurrier is most famous for his Fun ‘N Gun offense in Gainesville, where he won the national title after the 1996 season, and his quick wit.

And it’s comments like this that has Spurrier atop this list as the most hated coach in college football history.

Uhhh…..you need to research your facts; Florida did not win the 1996 National Championship. Nebraska won…they ran Florida right out of the Fiesta Bowl. Nebraska won 62-24. And the SEC psychosis continues….

    • Anonymous

U are an a**-clown!! Florida beat down your Noles 52-20!!!

      • Anonymous

Remember you only split with FSU that year. Spurriers just bitter he could never beat FSU in Tally. If you look at FSU’s numbers in the run of top 5 finishs you would realise no other team in any major sport in college is even close. UF has been punked by a womens college whos only played football for 1/2 the years. UF is scared of UM and FSU. They only still play FSU because of a legislative mandate.

        • Anonymous

What trophy did you get for your “top 5 finishes”. Oh yeah. That’s right. Being 5th in the country really doesn’t mean sh_t.

    • Gator Bait

Gators won in ’96, ’06 and ’08…get YOUR facts straight!

    • Gator Bait

that was ’95…Gators won championship in ’96, ’06, and ’08…get YOUR facts straight!

    • Anonymous

Florida did win the National Championship for the 1996 season. The Fiesta Bowl (which was played in 1996) was at the end of the 1995 season. After the 1996 season, Florida beat Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl to claim the National Championship. So I guess you are both right. Calm down kids. Oh, except for the SEC psychosis part. That’s just stupid.

      • Anonymous

I remember that. Thats when Florida State beat Florida in the final regular season game and Steve Spurrier started complaining and crying to the refs that FSU defense was hitting his players too hard, so the refs started calling stupid penalitites on FSU because of “CRY BABY SPURRIER”.

        • Anonymous

Yes, he sent tapes of what he said were late hits to the NCAA, ACC, and a bunch of sports writers & pundits, whining… They all said the hits were legit except one.. that was flagged… He’s a jerk. Intimidating refs, whining, off color remarks usually reserved for classless fans.

          • Anonymous

Up your A**!…… we love him at Carolina!Call him a whiner all you want, hes STILL a winner!

            • Nole Resurrected

Really? What has he won at USCe?

    • Quentin Williams

That Fiesta Bowl was after the 1995 season. Florida won it after the 1996 season. They beat Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl. There is no SEC psychosis. You should probably check your facts sir.

      • Quan

Most hated Coach? By whom. I am a Seminole fan and I hardly spend any time paying no mind to what Steve says. UF has had much better coaches since and Bowden used to beat Spurrier like a drum. So no, we don’t think he deserves that notoriety. Steve is pretty much a punk!

        • Anonymous

all you guys have it wrong…who has THE most national titles,? And they are from the SEC! FSU wouldnt join because it would have most likely been a disaster for the program. I like fsu, have seen them win big games vs high powered teams. They have a ways to go w the program, but are looking better.

          • Nole Resurrected

“And they are from the SEC!”

You say that like it means something. They’re ALL from the SEC.

    • Mike

You are thinking about the 1995 game when Nebraska spanked my Gators……we did, in fact, win the 96 Championship over the Noles……we also won the 06 and 08 Championship games.

    • your my bitch

Im pretty sure the gators won the 96′ championship unless the books are wrong and everyone else is wrong. which i doubt thousands of ppl are wrong. im pretty sure its just that one person that posted that note on here. maybe they dont know football or they cant read

  • I love beating Spurrier !

2009 Outback Bowll Iowa 31-Gamecocks 10 ! Iowa wore sport coats at events.S.C. doo rags and jeans. They were out partying in Tampa every night. No class Spurrier!

  • Anonymous

1996 gators win, 1995 Nebraska beat gators

  • Anonymous

How is that a “dig” at Flordia St.? They were ranked No. 1 in last years preseason. That’s just a fact! It’s not Spurrier’s fault they didn’t live up to the preseason rankings.

  • Ben Dover

He cannot top the “Free Shoes University” comment….I think Bowden had a mini-stroke over that one….

    • DL Stafford

Yeah – Bowden was so upset that he OWNED Spurrier 8-5-1 – and the one is the game that still keeps Spurrier up at night – the Choak at Doak. Watrching the arrogant Spurrier blow the largest lead in college football history was magic- and then FSU put the cherry on the Spurrier cream puff pie by beating the Hogtownettes in the Sugar. And current day, its nice to see Jimbo continuing the tradition by beating Spurrier in Atlanta last year. Oh – and one last note – that other Bowden, Terry, was 2-0 against the old ball coach. So Sourrier can run his mouth all he wants, but it won’t change the fact that he still has a very sharp spear stuck up his rectum that he obviously can’t remove.

      • Anonymous

8-5-1 is “owning”. Really? I’m not sure I would say I “owned” someone at 8-5-1. I would say the recent 7-0 run that UF beat down F$’u’ recently would be “owning”.

  • HogFan

Really?? Spurrier is one of the most hated coaches because he said “They were last year too.”?? I figured he said something about the Seminoles being wusses because they are STILL too scared to come to the SEC. Which is pretty much the same thing every coach, player, and fan in the SEC thinks. Just sayin.

  • Matt king

I hope Lattimore is feeling better.

    • Spurrier

He’s doing great, yeah, your boy caught a good lick on him, but let Latti see him coming and see what happens.

      • Anonymous

He did see it coming, he tuck the ball and braced himself……..but still got knocked out!

  • chill

Didnt fsu beat the gamecocks in the the bowl game last time they met. What ever coach

  • chill

Didnt reed even make your top reciver look stupid too

  • Anonymous

Lattimore did see him coming, check the film… I’ve seen it a dozen times just for kicks…

    • SCgamecocks03

There is nothing funny about a good kid like Lattimore getting hurt. He is a great player, student and person. FSU beat our butts that game but not cool celebrating an injury.

    • Chars10cock

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qkP_beV03o

      Laughed the whole time. idiot

  • Rod

You call that a “dig”? Writer needs to grow up.

  • Steve

Bowden had the old doofas ball coachs’ number in his career against FSU. Beat him overall 7-4-1. Also, the gator defense had a 31-3 lead in a key late season game and the Noles tied it 31-all; scoring at will in the fourth quarter against a pathetic defensive effort. Spurrier then fired the def.coordinator ASAP. How many chances did Stevo Spurrier give QB Garcia a chance to mend his drinking ways at S. Carolina–five; then he finally dismissed him. Get real gator historians for the idiot ball coach who was fired before he got the Gamecock job by the Redskins!!!!!
Spurrier left the gators after a bowl game in the lerch for the Redskins job and was a complete bust; then you got Ronnie Zook.

  • robnole

S Superior never beat the Noles in Tallahassee. When your QB’s continually get creamed by a strong defense you can either complain about “late hits” OR LEAVE A BACK IN THERE TO BLOCK FOR THE QB LIKE EVERY OTHER TEAM DOES !!!
    What a Whiner!!!

  • chill

Why would you even take a shot at fsu when the gamecocks havent done anything either since he took over. Maybe you should worry about your own team. Forget about 95 or 96 . Its 2012 so put up or shut up

  • Anonymous

Hey Steve did you ever win in Tally as a Croc? I think Not, Did you get beat again as a Cock I think so!!! when you can beat US, then run your loser mouth!!!!

  • Rob

Anyone want to announce Steve’s record as a Gator coach against Bowden?

  • Rob

    Fisher/FSU VS Spurrier/South Carolina; Fisher 1-Spurrier 0
    Bowden/FSU VS Spurrier/South Carolina; Bowden 8 (the tie was a WIN)-Spurrier 4

Can’t blame poor Stevie for Sour Grapes………hell FSU OWNES him!

  • this is only a jab bc of who said it

Check the facts…..he’s right. Much ado about nothing

  • Doug

All I can say about Spurrier is that he wears that visor to hide the circumcision mark. I admire him as a coach but he falls real short of being a class individual. And Bobby did own him and he never got over that. Go Noles!

  • keepingitreal4USC

We all know what the coach meant. Those of us that actually have comprehension skills know. Spurrier was saying that poll rankings at the beginning of the season usaully have little to do with how any given team will do during the season. His comment wasnt a dig at FSU. Had it been anybody else it would have been taken as a compliment that FSU was picked preseason #1 for 2 years in a row now. Doesnt matter how he answered that particular question the same article would have been written. I mean really how do you answer a question like that?

  • jason

The funny thing here is, Spurrier made a FUNNY comment. FSU was supposed to be good..last year. They were not! Its kind of sarcastic being that they would get picked AGAIN to be #1. Go Spurrier! GO GAMECOCKS!

  • Larry Britt

i am a die hard Gamecock fan, been going to the home games for 28 consecutive years. i was glad when he came to USC, but i also needed him to prove himself which he has done. , but Spurrier is Spurrier, he will always be a cocky arrogant loud mouth. but calm down people. some of you guys are going to pop a vessel or something.

  • Anonymous

The only reason.we were last year was because of the stellar defensive play in the Chik Fil A Bowl against who?!…thats right, Spurrier and those ‘Cocks

  • Bobby Bowden

Hey Chuck! Please explain to me what these guys are talking about…..

  • Anonymous

Lets talk about.the present, not the past….if u wanna bring up past who was the only team ever to go wire to wire?? thats right, FSU….but the present, those mighty gaytors barely.went 500 in a weak weak SEC East division

  • Greg

Funny how a coach that had it handed to him the last time he played FSU in a bowl game I may add is running his mouth

  • The Truth

    The truth is that:

    1) Spurrier wasn’t making a dig against Free Shoes University. He was simply stating a fact and diminishing the importance of a pre-season poll. Only a headline writer looking to attract eyeballs, or an F$U fan, with a perpetual inferiority complex toward the Gators would take it as a dig.

    2) Bowden’s record of 8 – 5 – 1 against Spurrier hardly constitutes “owning” him, particularly when the Gators won the match-up that determined the National Championship, then followed in the 1997 regular season by knocking F$U out of the Number One spot and costing them a shot at the NC.

    3) Bowden ran a sleazy, corrupt program that routinely violated NCAA rules. From about the mid ’90s on, he didn’t even coach. He delegated everything but recruiting and handling the media to assistants. He was great at PR, and nothing more. He didn’t even know the names of his own players.

    4) Bowden and F$U were invited to join the SEC back in the early ’90s, but ran away from the challenge. Bowden himself said he wanted the easiest path to the NC game, and that meant avoiding playing with the big boys. He even made reference to heavyweight fighter George Forman, saying something like “I like George Forman’s strategy. He may fight a bunch of stiffs, but at the end, he gets his shot at the title. That’s what I want.”

    5) Bowden’s assistants coached their players to take cheap shots and to play dirty. About what you’d expect from such a sleazy, lying hypocrite.

  • GamecockChris

    Wow who’s whinning now????

  • SpurrierNeedsaBra

Greatest comment EVER, “Spurrier only wears that visor to hide his circumcisionn scar.” Spurrier may have won 11 games at USuCk for the first time in history (sad), but he will NEVER EVER win a NC in Columbia. Chicken curse…..
