Former Memphis defensive coordinator Jay Hopson has become the first white head football coach in the history of the Southwest Athletic Conference – a league made up of historically African-American schools – where he will guide Alcorn State.
GulfLive.com reported that campus alumni, community leaders, and university donors cheered as Hopson was brought in for an introduction on Monday.
A defensive back at Ole Miss from 1988-91, Hopson has been on coaching staffs at Memphis, Marshall, Delta State, Southern Mississippi and Michigan.
He takes over for Melvin Spears, who went 2-8 in his lone season at Alcorn State. Jay Hopson profile
