#103: Indiana is … John Mellencamp’s ‘American Fool’

Lost Lettermen is counting down and ranking all 124 FBS college football teams from best to worst by comparing each to a well-known song. We will examine one team per day through the summer in the lead up to the 2012 season. Today’s team: The Indiana Hoosiers.

Overview:

2011 Record: 1-11
Head Coach: Kevin Wilson
Returning Starters: 15 (7 offense, 8 defense)
Key Players: QB Tre Roberson, SS Mark Murphy

Schedule:

9/1: vs. Indiana St.
9/8: @ Massachusetts
9/15: vs. Ball State
9/29: @ Northwestern
10/6: vs. Michigan St.
10/13: vs. Ohio St.
10/20: @ Navy
10/27: @ Illinois
11/3: vs. Iowa
11/10: vs. Wisconsin
11/17: @ Penn St.
11/24: @ Purdue

Skinny:

You would think that after a one-win season, there’s only room for improvement for the Indiana Hoosiers, right? Maybe not. Looking at the 2012 schedule, there is no slam-dunk victory on the schedule after Week 2 for second-year coach Kevin Wilson. With a roster laden with underclassmen and more than a handful of junior college transfers, Wilson might just have to accept that the Hoosiers could remain in the basement of the Big Ten for another season. Indiana has games against all three of its in-state rivals in Indiana St., Ball St. and Purdue. If probable starting quarterback Tre Roberson can quickly learn Wilson’s offense, the Hoosiers might have a shot at winning two of the three games. But it will also hinge on the Hoosiers’ front seven stopping the run, as eight opponents totaled over 200 yards last year.

If the Hoosiers were to actually go winless on the year, it would not be something new for Wilson, who went 0-11 in the late 1980s as the head coach of Fred T. Foard High School in Maiden, NC (sorry, Kevin). If he does not already feel like a fool, by about mid-season, Wilson will probably have those sentiments for originally accepting the Indiana gig in 2011. And what better song to commemorate another disaster of a season than “American Fool” by John Mellencamp, an Indiana native and Hoosiers super fan.
