As “Ole Miss Week” continues, we’re still wondering what happened at the end of the Rebels’ 2009 meeting with LSU, a 25-23 victory for Ole Miss from which it was lucky to escape after the Tigers’ late-game confusion.
LSU’s Stevan Ridley was tackled with 26 seconds left just barely on Ole Miss’ side of midfield to bring up 4th-and-26. Instead of calling an immediate timeout, the Tigers let 17 seconds tick off before stopping the clock.
Jordan Jefferson then miraculously picked up the first down with a Hail Mary toss to Terrance Toliver, who made a leaping grab and was tackled at the 7-yard line with one second left.
But LSU did not run its field goal team onto the field when the clock stopped after the first down; instead, it grounded the ball as time expired.
