Lost Lettermen is counting down and ranking all 124 FBS college football teams from best to worst by comparing each to a well-known song. We will examine one team per day through the summer in the lead up to the 2012 season. Today’s team: The Central Michigan Chippewas.

Overview:

2011 Record: 3-9
Head Coach: Dan Enos
Returning Starters: 16 (8 offense, 8 defense)
Key Players: QB Ryan Radcliff, S Jahleel Addae

Schedule:

8/30: vs. Southeast Missouri State
9/8: vs. Michigan State
9/22: @ Iowa
9/29: @ Northern Illinois
10/6: @ Toledo
10/12: vs. Navy
10/20: vs. Ball State
10/27: vs. Akron
11/3: vs. Western Michigan
11/10: @ Eastern Michigan
11/17: vs. Miami (OH)
11/23: @ UMass

Skinny:

Central Michigan coach Dan Enos has been living off the past. No, wait, that’s not right. What about the present? Can’t say that’s true, either. In his first head-coaching job, Enos has put forth a pair of 3-9 seasons at Central Michigan, which rewarded that overall mark by giving him a contract extension in February of 2012. He now is set to coach at the school through 2015. This fall, Enos will try to prove he’s worthy with redshirt senior Ryan Radcliff at quarterback along with his top four wide receivers. The banged-up defense from 2011 hopes that its top three tacklers in 2012 aren’t defensive backs again.

We still can’t tell you why Central Michigan – which was 11-2 in 2009 with Butch Jones on the sideline and Dan LeFevour under center – extended the time of Enos at the school. That’s why we are reminded of Kid Rock’s ballad “Only God Knows Why,” from the Michigan born and bred singer. We haven’t found an earthly person who can explain Enos’ extension but he better prove himself soon.
