#124: UTSA is … Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’

Lost Lettermen will count down all the FBS college football teams from best to worst by comparing each to a well-known song. We begin with the nation’s two worst clubs on Tuesday and will follow with one per day through the summer and into the fall.

Overview:

2011 Record: 4-6 (0-0)
Head Coach: Larry Coker
Returning Starters: 21 (11 offense, 10 defense)
Key Players: QB Eric Soza, WR Kam Jones, LB Brandon Reeves

Schedule:

8/30: @ South Alabama
9/8: vs. Texas A&M-Commerce
9/15: @ Georgia State
9/22: vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State
9/29: @ New Mexico State
10/13: @ Rice
10/20: vs. San Jose State
10/27: vs. Utah State
11/3: @ Louisiana Tech
11/10: vs. McNeese State
11/17: @ Idaho
11/24: vs. Texas State

Skinny:

UTSA enters FBS competition just one year after starting the program from scratch under Larry Coker. Yes, that Larry Coker. Looking like a team out of “Necessary Roughness,” the Roadrunners managed just a 4-6 record with the four victories coming against three no-name schools (Northeastern State, Bacone, Minot State) and
Georgia State – not exactly Murderer’s Row. In the one game against a good FCS opponent, Sam Houston State, the Roadrunners lost, 22-7. The 2012 slate isn’t much tougher meaning UTSA could win four games but this is still the worst team in the FBS.

As such, this team reminds us of “Friday,” generally considered the worst song of all time, because the Roadrunners are just looking forward to FBS play without seeming to understand how far over their heads they are. Can’t you just picture Larry Coker driving to the Alamo Dome on Friday this fall humming, “Partying, partying, yeah! Partying, partying, yeah! Fun, fun, fun, fun, looking forward to the weekend …” We sure can.
