BYU to Wear Black Pro Combat Unis?

Prior to the 2011 season, BYU’s football team went independent. Now the Cougars may be giving themselves a new look.

Check the photo below, which was tweeted Monday by Brian Mace of the Cougar Center podcast. It looks as if it has been taken from a meeting at which new black uniforms were being discussed.

Mace Tweeted the following then followed with the photo: “Confirmed. BYU will have Black Pro Combat Uniforms in 2012.”

The BYU blog Vanquish the Foe reasons that the photo does not look to be doctored, which would leave out the possibility that it could be an April Fools’ Day joke – even if it would be a bit late.

Draw your own conclusion from the photo, but just know the a new look could be on the horizon.

Stay with the traditional uniforms. Don’t change. If you do you will have a losing season next year. Remember the Crowton years when we changed from the traditional uniform to the all dark blue and gold.

Traditional teams like Alabama, ND, Mich, FSU, LSU, Penn State, USC, UCLA, ………………… may make slight changes but continue with their traditional styles of uniforms.

Keep the traditional trade mark for BYU Football Uniforms and don’t change.

Actually the uniform changes that we saw under Crowton started under LaVel Edwards in 1999. Those teams actually sported the dark blue helmets instead of white, and blue changed from royal blue to dark blue. Also, the bibs began back then, as well. In fact, the 12-2 season with Luke Staley and Brandon Doman featured dark blue and bibs.

I really doubt changing the uniforms is going to cause losses. The 1999 team went 8-4, the 2001 team 12-2. The uniforms had been changed for 3 years prior to the Crowton disaster even started.

The uniform while important is not as important as the sense the team has as a team… the chemistry, sense of family, willingness to sacrifice self for the good of the team. Regardless of what school one belongs to its the sense of chemistry the team itself has as a unit. Every year as athletes come and others go that chemistry changes… A great coach is able to find a way to take all the ingredients he has and make a great meal. Different uniforms simply changes one of the ingredients.

With all that being said… If I had a vote I would stick to the traditional colors and logos. Tradition is yet another ingredient that can affect the outcome of the team chemistry. The fewer changes you have to make chemically the greater the predictability of the ultimate outcome.

I agree with the previous comment… keep the traditional trade mark and colors for BYU Football uniforms. When was black ever considered a school color? Give me white and royal blue!

The uniforms actually changed in 1999 – two seasons before Lavell Edwards retired. Yes, the dark blue helmets, the change from royal blue to dark blue, even the bibs, came two seasons before Crowton. Furthermore, the 1999 team went 8-4, and Crowton’s first year was 12-2. It doesn’t look like changing uniforms would doom anyone to a losing system – however, mediocre play could.

Personally I don’t care. I liked the darker blue with the tan highlights, and I liked the dark helmets.
