Paterno Family Says No to JoePa Stadium

The family of Joe Paterno turned down an offer from Penn State, which wanted to rename Beaver Stadium after the legendary coach who died in January, according to a report from The Patriot-News on Sunday.

The newspaper said that the offer was part of a deal after Paterno died that was sought by the university, which would get a full release in return. That would have ensured that the Paterno family could not sue the school or speak negatively about it, the report said. The family reportedly refused the offer.

Another prong in the reported offer was for the university to honor Paterno’s contract, which it did anyway last week.

It was reported by ESPN.com – in a story that cited its news services, The Patriot-News and the school – that Penn State paid out the Paterno estate a package worth $6.7 million. It reportedly included contract bonuses and television and radio revenue among other things.

According to reports, the family remains upset about how the legendary coach was fired in the wake of the alleged Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. And it made a point to say that the money paid out was not a settlement but what was owed to Paterno.

The Patriot-News said that Paterno never cared much about the stadium bearing his name, though it was popular among fans to give him that honor.

It’s clear that it’s more important to his family that Paterno’s name remains in tact figuratively – instead of literally on the front of the Nittany Lions’ home.

    Wait for trial and it will come out that Joe Paterno knew rapes were going on and ignored it all for his fame and fortune. He never gave a damv about the kids or anything but himself and his sicko family.

    Yep his name will never be forgotten = everyone will know he was a no good, lying sob who allowed the rape of kids and condoned it all = by not reporting it and who knows = he was probably also dipping his wick the whole time. He cheated on his wife for decades and he paid them off.

    Penn State does not want the lawsuit to go forward because of all that will come out = the years of this sob coach allowing all the rapes of the mostly underprivileged kids but also Penn St college guys who they do not want it made public who they are = the college of the guys that were raped.

    What a disgrace. Shame on Paterno family and Penn State for not suing them. Joe Paterno did not want the stadium named after him because he knew stuff would come out later and they would rename it to someone who actually deserved the honor. Joe Paterno and his family is just as guilty as Sandusky is. They all knew it was going on fir decades. Just glad they will all rot in Hell.

    The college handled his firing very badly and now it appears they are trying to make amends. The family did the correct thing.

    you all are forgetting, not only football accomplishments, but what the family donated to the university, should have never been fired, just retire after the last two games of the season, he did what he was suppose to do, and naturally like all upper executives in today’s society, they were at fault, and ignorant in firing such a great man and what he did for the university.
