In case anyone was wondering, officials in Pikeville, KY, know how to spell “the.”
“To misspell the word ‘the’ is not done out of a sense of ignorance,” Pikeville city manager Donovan Blackburn said Monday, according to KentuckySports.com. “It’s done out of a sense of a mistake.”
The. Can you use that in a sentence?
The city’s grammar had been discussed after Pikeville gave UK coach John Calipari a key to the city and an accompanying plaque in his honor last week. On the plaque, “its” was seen as “it’s” and an “e” was left off “the.”
According to the report, Blackburn said that an apostrophe was added to “its” by iPad’s auto-correct as he sent the message to those producing the plaque while he was out of town. The dropped “e” can be blamed on the engraver, he said in the report.
We’re glad Blackburn knows how to spell “the,” supposedly, because otherwise we’d recommend he go through elementary school again.
