Rick Pitino is getting ready for Louisville’s national semifinal game with rival Kentucky on Saturday. Karen Sypher is trying to sell a book that condemns the coach.
Sypher, who is serving a seven-plus year prison sentence for trying to extort Pitino, released a book this month entitled “Guilty Until Proven Innocent—The Karen Sypher Story.”
Here’s how the book description on Amazon.com reads: “Read ‘Karen Sypher’s’ story and how the largest cover-up of rape led her from being a victim, to being convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison.
“… The Karen Cunagin Sypher cover-up is at the top of one of the most egregious revenge-plots in American Justice History.”
In 2009, Pitino admitted to having sex with Sypher in a Louisville Italian restaurant six years earlier. Reports said that Sypher – who also accused the coach of rape all those years later – soon after told Pitino that she was pregnant and wanted an abortion, for which Pitino allegedly paid $3,000.
Sypher was convicted in 2010 of extortion, lying to the FBI and retaliation against a witness. She had previous rape allegations against Pitino dismissed. On May 31, a court will hear an appeal from Sypher in which she claims there is a conspiracy.
She proclaimed on her website that a percentage of the book sales and donations will go to rape victims. Click on the links below to Deadspin, where we first saw the book, and Sypher’s site.
