Kansas State coach Frank Martin is a candidate for South Carolina’s head-coaching job, for which he has “heavy interest,” according to a report from Rivals.com.

A native of Miami, Martin would return to the Southeast if he were to sign on with the Gamecocks, but still it seems like an odd fit. Kansas State is a stronger program than South Carolina, which is an afterthought on the hardwood in the football-first SEC.
The Gamecocks haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2004 or to the Sweet 16 since 1973. Martin has been to the Big Dance in four of his five seasons at K-State, which he brought to the Elite Eight in 2010.
Known for his combustible personality on the sideline, it would be interesting to see how Martin would handle the growing pains of the Gamecocks, who went 10-21 overall and 2-14 in SEC play in 2011-12.
