Michigan’s Dr. Billy Taylor shares his thoughts about Michigan’s loss to Ohio State on Saturday.
I didn’t see what I wanted to see out of the team. I saw some great effort periodically, but it was a mental letdown. They made too many mistakes.
We had four interceptions and lost a fumble. That’s losing football. That’s not how you beat Ohio State. That’s not how you beat any team.
I thought Michigan beat themselves Saturday, because the victory could have been ours had we played virtually mistake-proof football. And that’s what winning teams do. Those teams that win championships make very few mental mistakes.
We were just laying eggs all over the field. It was embarrassing to me as a former Wolverine to watch this type of play.
The defense did well to hold them to 21 points. But the defense had to play too much. The offense wasn’t productive.
It was probably partially inexperience, but I just didn’t see the overall effort that I’m used to seeing, that fans and former players are used to seeing out of Michigan football teams. I’m not putting the team down. I’m just stating the facts.
For two years now, we’ve been coming to the stadium faithfully, and we’ve been disappointed. We showed some improvement from last year, but we’ve still got a long ways to go.
I still think coach Rod will get it done. I don’t know much time he has left. I’m hoping the administration and new incoming athletic director will at least give him another year. I don’t know.
I still support Rich Rod. I know the man. I know he’s a great coach. I think it’s unfortunate we’ve played like we have for the last two years. But everybody knows is, at Michigan, you have to beat Ohio State and Michigan State more than they beat us.
What I’ve been seeing lately is very disappointing. I’m still a Wolverine. I support the team. But it’s time for them to get back up.
