Mike Sweetney Living Large in P. Rico

Former Georgetown star Michael Sweetney, a first-round NBA draft pick who flamed out of the league quicker than expected, still is playing professionally in Puerto Rico, where he, um, doesn’t look to be in great shape.

Check the photo below of Sweetney – provided by this Twitter account – who looks overweight, to say the least, while in uniform for the Vaqueros de Bayamon.

The ninth overall selection by the New York Knicks in the 2003 NBA draft, Sweetney played in the league from 2003-07 before heading overseas to play in China, Uruguay and Puerto Rico.

Sweetney always carried a lot of weight, and it was his conditioning in part that contributed to his NBA bust. But we think Sweetney is much heavier than his listed weight of 295 pounds. Michael Sweetney profile

That is sad, actually. Sweetney has true, genuine and very rare talent. He was a big man with smooth, graceful and effortless moves. I know it must be easy for folks to make fun of him in this kind of shape but he must really be suffering.

This is nothing new. He couldn’t even bench 185 in pre-draft workouts – he’s always been soft and never did anything about it.

As they say, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
