It didn’t work out for Mitch Mustain on the gridiron, so he’s turning to the baseball diamond.
The ex-Arkansas and USC quarterback signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago White Sox, according to ESPNChicago.com on Friday.
The report said Mustain, 23 – who hasn’t pitched since high school – hit 90 miles-per-hour with his fastball during a workout with the White Sox, prompting him to give baseball a shot.

He told a local Arkansas station that the White Sox believe that they can raise his velocity into the mid-90s. According to the report, Mustain said he could return to football if his shot at baseball doesn’t work out.
A former Gatorade Player of the Year in football, the Arkansas native disappointed at the college level after leaving the Razorbacks – where he won his first eight games but clashed with coach Houston Nutt – and not playing much for the Trojans.
Since then, Mustain has had an even more winding road.
In February 2011, Mustain was arrested for suspicion of selling prescription pills. He signed in the Arena League in September after getting released from the CFL in June. There also were rumors that he would join the Marines, and there’s a documentary about his journey coming out soon.
