If you were looking for a run-of-the-mill press conference from new Washington State coach Mike Leach, you came to the wrong place on Tuesday.
What else would you expect from the pirate-loving Leach?
Leach responded to a question about his love of those pirates and gave an answer that spanned more than three minutes, explaining how a reference in a New York Times Magazine article written by Michael Lewis spawned the phenomenon.
After a reference to “swinging your sword” in the article as a metaphor to how Leach’s teams at Texas Tech competed on the field, Leach said that he received tons of pirate-themed gifts from around the world.
One came from closer to home: a six-foot electronic pirate with a motion sensor, a gift from former Texas Tech basketball coach Pat Knight, that Leach stationed in his office. Needless to say, the coach said it scared the cleaning lady every night.
Why are we not surprised?
