PSU’s Matt McGloin Apologizes for Fight

Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has apologized for his role in a locker room fight Saturday with receiver Curtis Drake, according to The Big Lead on Sunday.

McGloin’s Twitter account was deleted, but The Big Lead obtained tweets that have been identified as from another private account belonging to the Penn State quarterback. StateCollege.com also suggested the tweets were from McGloin.

The web site combined those tweets to form the following apology: “Time to man up: Me and C Drake got into verbal disagreement on practice field, I felt embarrassed that things were said in front of team. Situation started to cool down during remainder of practice. I was still pissed, C Drake wanted to clear the air with me in the locker room. I wanted no part to talk to Curtis at that moment, I gave him a piece of my mind, and I got what was coming to me.

“Curtis did the right thing by trying to clear the air with me, I let my emotions get the best of me. I made a mistake, and I feel awful. I will (sic) like to apologize to Coach Bradley, my teammates, other coaches, and all the young fans that look up to me. This behavior should not be tolerated, and I will accept any punishment handed down to me. All I ask is for privacy when talked about any injuries I may or may not of suffered. Thank you.”

According to reports, McGloin was sent to the hospital after being knocked out with one punch and suffering a seizure. Those details haven’t been confirmed.

The following comments came from McGloin’s public Twitter account after it was reportedly hacked and before it was deleted: “BTW..we all know i would knock Drake the f*** out.. just saying”.

As we wrote on Saturday, the Nittany Lions’ season just continues to get worse. But an apology from McGloin at least is the first step toward moving on from the latest bad news coming from State College.

I understand these types of incidents occur in football, but with PSU football program already under a microscope and scrutiny both Drake and McGloin should have never allowed it to happen. Speak your mind. Walk away. Their actions should not be representative of a PSU player, so dismiss them. Coaching staff is likely gone (a clean break), but if Bradley, Johnson, Buggs, Vanderlinden, et al. are to be considered for remaining on the staff, this type of behavior is not going to help! Would it have occurred if Joe were still in charge? Bradley needs to lay down the law. I would have mangers clean out their lockers, box their things, and dismiss them. Honor scholarships for spring semester, but tell them they’re done at PSU unless a new coach is hired that wants them back in the fall. University should insist both have anger management if they want to stay in school. Regardless of cause, Drake has had numerous other incidences. Under the circumstances, it’s too late for apologies. The damage is done. Too bad they didn’t have that kind on animosity against Wisconsin.

Same with Bolden. Don’t care how “minor” his new legal problem is, he too should be thrown off the team. He should be gone too. There’s time to let Belton take enough snaps between now and the bowl game to run basic offense and wildcat. Paul Jones should be the starter next year regardless of who the head coach will be. McGloin and Bolden do not deserve to lead or play. To apologize is fine and necessary, but it’s too late also. These actions would have been inexcusable before, but given the existing conditions and state of affairs, PSU football program doesn’t need any additional negativism, regardless of how small. One additional comment, I know some of the players felt they should have had a better bowl game but given the current conditions, the team’s poor performance at Wisconsin, they need to put themselves in place of someone on the bowl committees. Why would anyone want PSU representing their bowl right now? Someone at the Nebraska game said it best on their sign: “We were Penn State”. It will take a long time to come back and the behavior, lack of leadership qualities, lack of common sense, on the part of McGloin, Drake, and now Bolden also, won’t help. PSU is fortunate they got the bowl they did.
