Florida Atlantic’s football program has only been around since 2001. Since then, the Owls have been coached by the legendary Howard Schnellenberger, who will retire when his contract expires after the 2011 season.
According to the Miami Herald, FAU is looking at two big names – Randy Shannon and Mike Leach – as Schnellenberger’s successor.
Shannon is the former Miami (FL) head coach who was fired after the 2010 season, while the controversial Leach was ousted at Texas Tech in 2009.
“Randy is a man of integrity, a first-class guy and first-class coach,” FAU athletic director Craig Angelos said, according to the Herald. “I want to see if he’s interested.” However, the report said Shannon is interested in the open Arizona job.
Angelos, who worked at Miami while Shannon was an assistant there, also said he “would consider” Leach. The newspaper said that Angelos has a good reputation with the former Texas Tech coach.
Point blank: Leach won’t be FAU’s next coach. And while we’d be surprised if Shannon ends up Boca Raton, maybe Schnellenberger – a Hurricane coaching legend – can convince Shannon it’s a great place to rebuild his coaching image.
