Realignment Talk

1. Texas Tech (Steven Sheffield vs. Taylor Potts)

2. Oregon (Nate Costa vs. Darron Thomas)

1. Texas Tech (Steven Sheffield vs. Taylor Potts)

Even though Tommy Tuberville wants more emphasis on the running game, this is still Texas Tech and having a good quarterback is still of the utmost importance. He’s got two great options in Steven Sheffield and Taylor Potts, both of whom would start at almost any other program in America.

Deemed the next greatest Texas Tech quarterback before last season, Potts is the returning starter and he threw for over 3,400 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2009.

But when Sheffield was on the field, he lit it up as well – like his 7 TD performance vs. Kansas State. And after Potts was ineffective in the Alamo Bowl, Sheffield led the late-game charge. Sheffield likely would’ve permanently taken over the starting position from Potts had Sheffield not broken his foot late in a game against Nebraska.

Tuberville has said that Sheffield had a slight edge but the battle stalled when both players got injured in spring practice. Tuberville has already said the starter will likely be announced two weeks before the opener. Tuberville understands he can’t come into Lubbock and completely change the passing culture. So getting this call right will be a big step toward winning and acceptance from the Tech community.

Taylor Potts
