ESPN’s Nessler Not Good at Geography

When it comes to announcing football games, ESPN’s Brad Nessler is rock solid. But his geography? Not so great.

Check the video below of Nessler doing a promo for Wednesday’s Orange Bowl between West Virginia and Clemson during Tuesday’s Sugar Bowl that included Virginia Tech.

Said Nessler: “The only team to beat Virginia Tech this season (before Michigan), Clemson Tigers, champions of the ACC, take on another team from the state of Virginia – West Virginia …”

Brad, there was that whole Civil War thing during which West Virginia broke away from Virginia and became its own state. But who can keep up?

Hey there Brad we are right beside Virginia we share borders we are not from Virginia, It’s West Virginia, u know Pat White, Steve Slaton, Jeff Hostetler, Marc Bulger, Jerry West I can keep going if needed

  • michael johnson

West Virginia left during the civil war, not after

  • WESTBYGODVIRGINIA

You Do realize that WEST VIRGINIA is now a state all by itself…of course you DON’T!! Go back and study third grade geography!! And to think they actually pay for stupidity like you is sickening.

  • Donna

Come on Man!!! What an idiot!!!

  • Phil Farmer

Actually it was during the Civil War not after that West Virginia made the split. At least you know West Virginia is it’s own State…..I’m assuming.

  • Mark Dunlap

I everyone wants to call us dumb hillbillies.

    • Anonymous

ya when dumda***s like you make a comment like that you moron

  • Sheila

And nessler is a flipping idiot!!! If you guys are going to announce, please check your stories before you begin. He should be embarrassed from his public school education. No geography? Brad, remember the Civil War?

  • Beverly

Jeez, everyone! I went to WVU but come on! It wasn’t a personal attack on the people of West Virginia. I have to believe that Brad knows that West Virginia is it’s own state! Every single one of us has experienced a dumb moment, one in which we’ve made ourselves feel so stupid. Lighten up! Just enjoy a laugh! Go Mountaineers!

    • WV still is my home

Sad thing Beverly is that Brad is not the only one that does not think of WV as its own state, When I tell people that I am from WV they ask me how far I close I lived to Richmond.

    • Craig

I agree with you here. It is not an attack on the people of west Virginia. I am not offended by this slip of the tongue in a live broadcast at all.

      • Mega

It isn’t actually an attack, it is just stupidity. For some reason, there are a LOT of people in Florida that have no idea there is a West Virginia. When my mother vacationed there with my aunt, they naturally went out sightseeing… people would ask where they were from and then say something like “Western Virginia?” “The western part of Virginia?” “How far west?” and they would have to say it again “West Virginia” and add “The STATE!”
She said a few times were somewhat amusing, but after it approached the tenth time (and then passed this mark), she began to wonder if they even had schools in Florida.

    June 20, 1863.

  • Mendy

OMG! Here we go again~~ Do people not study geography? I can’t tell you how many times I have been out of state and said where I was from and people are “Where in Virginia is that?” NO, IT’S WEST BY GOD VIRGINIA!

  • Kel

I’m grew up in West Virginia and have now lived in several other states. It’s amazing how many people don’t realize West Virginia is its own state. They just think it’s a part of Virginia … you know … near Richmond.

  • Anonymous

Are you kidding me???? C’mon….Brad. You should visit WEST Virginia sometime, It’s Wild and Wonderful…Almost Heaven….

    • WVTA2E

And as close to heaven that you can get without dying!

  • Jay Church says…

Are you kidding, Brad? You should visit WEST Virginia sometime. John Denver said it best….Almost Heaven!! Peace…

    • Angie Shockley

agreed! If he actually visits this beautiful state, he won’t forget where we are! However, I am disappointed in him and this mistake. It seems to perpetuate the negative perception of the Mountain State.

      • Sean

i just want him to come to West Virginia so I can kick his a**

  • Susie Siers

You are an ESPN announcer and you make a mistake like that?

  • Russ

I bet he doesn’t make this mistake when it comes to North Carolina and South Carolina, North Dakota and South Dakota. You know, those are only really two states. The states of Carolina and Dakota. Everybody knows that.

    • ANON

Well it isn’t East Virginia now is it. It’s Virginia and West Virginia.

Just because the public education system failed him, doesn’t mean you can blame him.

Sure it’s ignorant and what not, but maybe you should instead blame the government for not funding public education.

      Seems logical to me.

  • Patty

Well, at least we know you didn’t go to school in WV, they teach geography in schools there! how embarrassing for you! or do you care…

  • WVGirl

    Wow..Really? That’s just sad..

  • Sean

Hey Brad you are a moron West Virginia is a state been a state for a long time what you said on national tv just goes to show you there are IDIOTS everywhere ESPN should fire you, you’re a first class moron and shouldn’t even be in broadcasting period next time stupid pick up a map!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

How stupid you are Brad Nessler Go to School Hillbillie

  • Willie

Ask yourself this question. Does any West Virginia team ever get credit from any ESPN announcer? We would have to be leading a major bowl game by 29 points at halfime to have something positve said. Oh, that is tonight.

    • WVTA2E

Isn’t it so. I continue to listen and watch as most of the ESPN comments about WV and/or WVU are not positive but more negative than anything. We are so used to this that if one positive thing is said then we are stunned. ESPN lighten up- learn a little bit more about WV/WVU and give us a break. I do believe we have earned it especially after the Orange Bowl massacre!

  • Since1863

Almost 150 years buddy…. for the love of God… it’s in our freaking name! WEST VIRGINIA

  • Kay

I know very little about sports but one thing I know for sure is that if I were going to be an announcer I would at least know where the teams are from……I feel Brad owes not only WVU but the citizens of the state of WV an apology. Our state is Wild and Wonderful and Almost Heaven……maybe he needs to visit sometime!

  • Proud WEST Virginia Fan

Brad – Sure you know by now that West Virginia is, and has been a state now for more than 100 years!! Embarrassing as your lack of knowledge must be, I hope you apologize for it. The good people of WV forgive easily. Will also forget as soon as the next public figure shows same lack of knowledge!

  • Karen J. Fisher

You owe WVU and the state of West Virginia an apology.

You comments regarding WV [West Virginia] its statehood and location were ignorant, misinformed and inexcusable.

In the future, please do some sort of studying of geography and history before you allow that big ‘ole foot to get stuck in you big mouth again.

    A proud West Virginian,

    Karen J. Fisher

  • Scott

It’s the way people are. I forget the statistic, but some sadly high amount of high school students can’t locate NORTH AMERICA on a globe. West Virginia is in fact, it’s own state. Seceding from the Confederacy to join the Union on June 20, 1863. Making the 35th state in the U.S.A. Which in itself is kind of ironic, given the amount of idiot dumba** rednecks around here. And the amount of even more ‘wannabe’ rednecks. God, who aspires to be a freakin redneck.

Anyways, you see it all the time. People just never want to acknowledge West Virginia. If you watch the Weather Channel, they’ll mention EVERY single state bordering West Virginia, but never say “West Virginia.” It’s always, ‘The Ohio Valley’ or ‘The Virginia’s’ or ‘Western Virginia’ Even if whatever storm they’re talking about is about to slam our state, this is what you’ll hear “Watch out there around Kentucky, Ohio, maybe even up into Pennsylvania, eventually moving into the Virginia’s. So watch out there Western Virginia, this storm is heading right for you”

I swear it makes me want to scream. It’s the same way with the news, or anything that has to deal with this area. Unless it specifically deals with our state, and ONLY our state, do they ever utter the words ‘West Virginia.’ It’s kind of a running joke around here. We always say if they say our states name on the weather channel better get into the basement because it’s gunna hit the fan.

And what was that comment I heard from one of the Sportscasters during the game, talking about one of our WVU players. Saying something along the lines that he was an excellent player, and should be a Heisman Trophy winner, but “Because he plays way out there in West Virginia..” and I can’t remember the rest after that, but I want to say he said something like “.. Because he plays way out there in West Virginia …. he doesn’t get noticed.” As soon as I heard that I looked at my buddies and just said ‘What the f**k’s that supposed to mean?!’

  • Angiie

He must not watch the weather channel, they point out our state on their map and even tell you who we are. We are even a different color on the map…hello U.S. Geography! Doesn’t anyone ever look at a map?

  • WV Girl

You give jocks a bad name. You dumb jock.

  • FiveOh

    Wow, you people are sensitive.

  • e.morgan

Give the guy a break, he was probably trying to be clever and should have said “another team from the Virginias”.

  • Me

C’mon buddy, I’ll show you a map! You see that really odd shape there above Virginia, beside Kentucky, and below Ohio and Pennsylvania? Yeah, that’s West Virginia!!!!! Try the moonshine if you ever figure out where we are!
